gconf and screensaver

Using Gnome 2.14
I want the screensaver set to 10mins when using the computer and off when watching Mythtv.
I was going to use two $HOME/.gconf/apps/gnome-screensaver/%gconf.xml files. One with SS turned on and the other with it off and then use a script to switch back and forth. I would run it when launching mythfrontend and again when shutting it down to get the desired screensaver settings.
However, that seems a silly way of doing it.
There must be a better way.
Can anyone tell me what it is?
Thanks, Mark
