Aptitude wants to remove "ubuntu-desktop"

I am moving from Debian to Ubuntu. To remove Serpentine, I tried
"aptitude purge serpentine", but it says:

The following packages will be automatically REMOVED:
  ubuntu-desktop

I guess "ubuntu-desktop" is an improtant package. I tried
"aptitude install ubuntu-desktop" and then tried to purge Serpentine, but it
still wants to remove "ubuntu-desktop". How should I proceed?
