You might want to try that. I ended up using 915Resolution to fix it
because gtf wouldnt work for me. If you do decide to use 915Resolution
just install the .deb and edit /etc/defaults/915Resolution. Then
1280x800 should work on startup. My xorg.conf is nearly the same. 



I fixed my touchpad by upgrading to 2.6.16.5.. I also found I needed
alsa-driver-1.0.11rc5 for the sound to work again.
