HAL error

I just installed Ubuntu 5.10 . HAL gave an error, and the "Home", "Computer"
and "Trash" icons in the Desktop are missing. How can this be set right?

HAL gives an error message while booting (I disabled quiet and splash in
GRUB configuration) but it scrolls off quickly. In which file can I read the
error message?
