Cannot run terminal emulators in Gnome

Since some recent updates, when I launch Gnome Terminal I get "There was 
an error creating the child process for this terminal."  The intended 
child is bash.

In the past, similar failures have related to privilege or ownership 
problems with  $HOME/tmp files.  To be on the safe side, I logged out 
from the gui and deleted all $HOME/tmp/*.  That didn't help.

Could someone please give me a clue how to determine where the problem is?
