Ubuntu and Kubuntu (or Gnome and KDE) are both officially supported.
Gnome is the focus of Ubuntu, and it will stay that way. KDE is the
focus of Kubuntu and it will stay that way. Currently there is one paid
developer for KDE (Jonathan Riddell) and the same amount of developers
for Gnome (SebastiƩn Bacher). Many improvements in Ubuntu (like the
espresso installer or launchpad integration) are implemented first in
Ubuntu and later in Kubuntu, not because Kubuntu is a stepchild (because
it's not), but because Kubuntu may have different focus points.

Edubuntu is a supported derivative, xubuntu will be one very soon.
