Ethernet Problems on Acer Laptop

Hi to all!

I've got some odd problem with my ethernet-adapter used in an Acer 1694i
WLMI laptop.
The card is a broadcom tg3 modell. It is corretly listed in the
hardware-setup and also listed in my networks-configuration within Ubuntu.
The problem is that I could not get online with neither an automatic nor
an manual configuration of it. When I first configured it manually, I
could at least ping 127.0.0.1. But even that was not possible when I
used automatic configuration.
The cards (ethernet & wlan) are both marked as deactivated in my
network-configuration-tool but I cannot get them to activate, because
they immediately switch back to deactivated state again after trying.
Also the log-files do not display any warning or error concerning
ethernet (at least not the ones I looked at...)
I tried to find a solution by browsing through the forums etc., but the
only topic really concerned with my problem considered using

sudo dhclient eth0 (or eth1 ...)

which did not work out for me. What I did understand from its contents
was that it had something to do with the versions of dhclient and the
renaming of ethernet-adapters, but I could not quite get the hang of it.

Here's a bunch of links that might help you to help me ;-)

(My bible for the last couple of days - a good guide of installing linux
on my laptop series ... there's also a list of hardware used in my
laptop... if that is of any help!)

Thanks a lot for your time & effort! I'm really stuck here!

Greets,

tobias
