A default ubuntu install will take up about 1.8 Gigs of space (1.6 for
Dapper since Dapper no longer caches all the packages on the cd) plus
swap.  The swap is something like 1.5 times your ram.



I'm a big fan of "everything on one partition" myself.  I leave about 4
or 5 gigs of free space on a hard drive for such "playing around"
installations.
