I think the VMware Player doesn't let you create your own VMs.

VMware Server is in a free beta at the moment. I've been trying it on
Windows to run Ubuntu Server. It's a bit clunky & fiddly compared to
VirtualPC, but it works & it's free & there is a Linux version.
