Apparently you have downloaded something that required changes in the login
procedures. The solution is to reconfigure stuff, probably
xserver-xorg/xserver-xfree86, or gdm/kdm, depending on what you are using.

I don't believe you have to reinstall either. Commands are probably 'sudo
dpkg-reconfigure <correctpiecehere>', but it's hard to tell without knowing what
kind of errors you saw. Could you please attach the corresponding errors?
Also, what version of Ubuntu are you using? Just making sure we're on the same
page, if it's got to do with Breezy, I'm afraid I can't help since I haven't
done so yet, and since it's still unstable...
