PLEASE HELP: X server freezes on start-up

see /etc/X11/xorg.conf for line
Driver      "nvidia"
or
Driver      "nv"

nvidia is driver from nvidia.com (nv is from xorg)
If you have nvidia then try my advice
dpkg -l *nvidia*

see all nvidia package
and remove it with
sudo apt-get remove <name_of_package>

After this, you have install it again for 3d etc
