Should I back up / like the how to shows, or just /home? My main
concern is my personal files. But am I correct in assuming all the
prefs. and programs that I have installed would be lost if I only backed
up /home right? And this will fit on a CD, cause I dont have a DVD
burner.

I understand(basically) what you are asking, but I dont think I have
enough experience to try that out without more help/steps. I
feel(sadly) that I Would screw something up and make things worse than
they are.

I am using Hoary, and I didnt plan on updating till the offical release.
Does anyone know if this option with partition magic will work, or any
other ideas. Thanks for all the help so far, and sorry about all the
basic questions...
