Sleep and restart problems on laptop

The restart and sleep problems on laptop are very painful.

Since I installed Linux on my laptop, it has not been rebooted by 
"shutdown -r now", only can be shutdown. Sometimes it falls asleep 
without any evidence.

Another problem is that my laptop will sleep when I use some command in 
console mode -- especially "apt-get -h" or "apt-cache -h". That's very 
strange!
