Detailed Report:

I am getting sound on the destop G4 now but when starting up (let's say)
frozzen-bubble I get: /dev/sequencer: No such file or directory.

What I am guessing, udev is not making the proper device files in /dev.

I have looked at alsa's web page in the trouble shooting section and
checked everything that I have and it matches and everything checks out.
The /dev/sndstat lists as:

# cat sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.9b emulation code)
Kernel: Linux asterix 2.6.13.1.ws1 #1 Fri Sep 9 23:35:38 PDT 2005 ppc
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
PowerMac Screamer Rev 0
SB Live [Unknown] (rev.7, serial:0x802c1102) at 0x1000, irq 53

Audio devices:
0: PowerMac Screamer (DUPLEX)
1: ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback (DUPLEX)

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices:
1: EMU10K1 MPU-401 (UART)

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers:
0: PowerMac AWACS
1: Cirrus Logic CS4297A rev 4

and all the modules are installed:
snd_emu10k1 142436 0
snd_rawmidi 30784 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_seq_device 10860 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi
snd_ac97_codec 103424 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_util_mem 5568 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_hwdep 11364 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_powermac 55588 0
snd_pcm_oss 68192 0
snd_mixer_oss 23488 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 110468 4
snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec,snd_powermac,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 30276 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
snd 71156 10
snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_ac97_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_powermac,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 11524 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 12808 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm

Now, I have been used to using alsconfig to change the alsa soundboard
but looking around a bit more I found that GNOMEs sound volume under
file had all the installed sound modules to change from one to another.
I tried each one and loged out and back in and found sound works now on
the desktop.

But....

as the Powerbook... I still get plenty of static noise which even
matching as close as I can to the sound settings, it still does not make
a difference.

Powerbook /dev/sndstat
# cat sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.9rc2 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux matrix 2.6.12.5.ti1 #2 Fri Aug 26 22:35:03 PDT 2005 ppc
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
PowerMac Tumbler (Dev 18) Sub-frame 0

Audio devices:
0: PowerMac Tumbler

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers:
0: PowerMac Tumbler

loaded modules:
snd_powermac 55556 2
snd_pcm_oss 67648 1
snd_mixer_oss 23296 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 111716 2 snd_powermac,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 29668 1 snd_pcm
snd 66612 7
snd_powermac,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 11524 2 snd
snd_page_alloc 11684 1 snd_pcm

/proc/asound files:

version: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.9rc2
(Thu Mar 24 10:33:39 2005 UTC).

# cat cards
0 [Tumbler ]: PMac Tumbler - PowerMac Tumbler
                     PowerMac Tumbler (Dev 18) Sub-frame 0

# cat devices
16: [0- 0]: digital audio playback
  0: [0- 0]: ctl
33: : timer

# cat modules
0 snd_powermac

# cat pcm
00-00: PMac Tumbler : PowerMac Tumbler : playback 1

# cat timers
G0: system timer : 1000.000us (10000000 ticks)
P0-0-0: PCM playback 0-0-0 : SLAVE

Now with that being said... the Powerbook still has a bad case of the
static noise. If anyone else has experienced something like to this
that I have not seen on the archives.. please let me know...
