X.org updates change dozens of packages

Every couple of days now, apt-get upgrade tells me that
somewhere on the order of 70 packages -- all of them related
to various x.org drivers -- have changed. Have all those
packages actually changed, or is there some build-dependency
problem? If the latter, is there any way to factor out bits
of those drivers so that small changes to the xorg package
itself don't require me to download all the associated
drivers?
