Thanks guys, in the "Save As" dialog, Gedit let me add new code pages.
No CP437, but PC850 which is virtually the same for all the characters
that matter, was available. Tried a few extended characters, saved using
this code page, checked with a binary editor and all was well, like in
the old MS-DOS time, phew ! It's convenient too, as I can stick to UTF-8
as default for the entire system, and easily/quickly select the old code
page when saving my programs in Gedit.
So I will consider this problem "solved". :-)
