location of Ubuntu boot partition

Yep, type "sudo grub" first to get a grub shell, then
"find /grub/menu.lst" will tell you which device has a /grub/menu.lst
file.

Of course, you could also use the "find" command in the grub shell at
boot (before grub loads the kernel).
