alsa-space: xrun of at least 0.007 msecs. resetting stream

I've been getting errors of this sort in mplayer all the
time recently:

	alsa-space: xrun of at least 0.007 msecs. resetting stream

This is, of course, an alsa error, and playing through esd
(-ao esd in mplayer) works just fine. But unfortunately I
think this same error is causing problems in the firefox
mplayer plugin, and I don't know offhand how to get that
plugin to play through esd.

So two questions:

1) Is anyone else getting this error? If so, have you
figured out how to fix it?

2) How does one configure the firefox mplayer plugin to play
through esd?
