Problems with network-admin on Hoary

I'm having strange problems with network-admin on Hoary. No matter if I
start it from the menu or from the command line it complains that the
password is wrong. It displays its window and then a dialogue pops up.
AFAICS that means the password is correct, otherwise I wouldn't get
past (gk)sudo, right?
So, what's the problem?
I'm not sure what more info to include in order to get a good answer to
the question...
The network device I want to configure is an Atheros wireless (AR5212,
802.11abg). There is nothing entered in /etc/network/interfaces relating
to it. I've installed the restricted modules package and ath_* are
loaded.
