No, and no :-)  "mail" is a program used for sending mail - typically
locally, but it depends on the setup of your MTA, too.

Clearly you _have_ created /var/mail/carthik - and if you've followed
directions, it's set up correctly.  However, it's up to your MDA to
actually put the mail in there.  And to put it in the correct format. I'm
guessing you have it configured to go somewhere else.  Exim used to like to
use /home/carthik/Maildir (for maildir - It was something else for mbox).
