Do you have fetchmail configured to pass your mail on to procmail for
delivery?

The last line of your .fetchmailrc should be this:

mda "/usr/bin/procmail -d %T"

Procmail should then deliver mail to /var/mail/carthik, creating the
file if necessary.

If not, try this:

sudo touch /var/mail/carthik
sudo chown carthik /var/mail/carthik
chmod 0600 /var/mail/carthik
