You may be able to write a script that runs the emulator, then resets the
screen size afterwards, using xrandr.
I think there are different graphics systems in some of the emulators, though,
that may vary in how well they interact with X. Might want to check the
manual, and see if you can get it to use X-only calls, or SDL calls, or
something like that.
Finally, there are other emulators. qemu and/or bochs using qemu might be the
fastest, if you're running it on an x86 machine.
