As Douglas Bates pointed out to me this problem came about
"because a reference to the R executable script was not fully
qualified.  If you have another R executable that occurs in the
search path before /usr/bin/R (say /usr/local/bin/R) you will
need to temporarily move it to another name to get these scripts
to work."
