You should try emacs from cvs - with a gtk2 interface, gnome wide copy & paste (ie, you can copy a text from emacs and it will work in any other modern application, quite handy) and a few more features I can't remember...
If you don't want to compile yourself, there is a package called emacs-snapshot in debian sid, and it seems to work in ubuntu 5.10 (I haven't had any problems the last month)...
