I finally corrected this. I didn't realize that kaffeine had a menu
selection for kaffeine-gstreamer and kaffeine-xine. It's in the menu
Settings => Player Engine => Kaffeine. This works now.

I installed 'totem-xine' which kicked off totem-gstreamer. Now I can
start totem and select the menu item to play the DVD and it works.
Seems like gstreamer isn't ready for prime time yet .. I wonder why
ubuntu and fedora insist on using it??
