I would say this isn't typical for Ubuntu.  Most software installs through Synaptic with ease.  The real thing causing Java
installs to be so difficult is that Ubuntu chooses to support only "free" (as in freedom) software.  If Ubuntu installed
Sun's Java, or made it easy to install Sun's Java, this wouldn't be quite so difficult.  In my experience with Ubuntu, if
it's free (as in freedom) software, its usually pretty easy to install, and if not, it's often a pain.

Don't get me wrong, I understand Ubuntu's philosophy.  It's not my personal philosophy, but if that's the approach they want
to take in providing me with a great distribution, it's their choice to make.  No complaints here.
