i think "the best way" is to install eboard (open-source, free of
charge) and play at FICS --> http://www.freechess.org/ which is the
free-of-charge result when ICS became the commercial ICC

apart from eboard you can also use other software to play online at FICS
http://www.freechess.org/cgi-bin/Download/FICS_Download_Interface.cgi
