Earthlink DSL failing to see Ubuntu

Well, in order to send that last message I had to hook up my old dial-up
modem.  Whadayaknow!  Now my DSL works!  But only when the dial-up
connection is made although the dial-up connection just sits there,
idle. What gives with that? Also, my hostname has now changed to
dhcppc0. I have to <sudo killall-9 gdm> and start gdm again for the
hostname to return to WizardsTower. 
BUT!! I have a DSL connection now, for whatever it's worth.
