I also have the same problem, with the same soundcard:

I'd start to think there was a bug to report, except it appears others
with exactly the same hardware as me (T22 Thinkpad) don't have
problems:

Have tried checking all the levels, and the forced restart suggested by
crimsun at fungus.sh.nu, with no effect :(
