Firefox and Opera (strange startup behavior)

When playing video on the net (the site I use the most
is bbc.co.uk) using Firefox launched from the main
panel, the video player shows Helix in the video
window and after a bit, a box appears and just says
error.

When lauching Opera from the main panel, trying the
same video .. the video player is pretty blank apart
from the start stop buttons etc and then I get the box
that simply says error.

When starting both these browsers from the command
line, they both find Real Player and play the video!!

Also, in the default command for Firefox, the command
is firefox %u. I've been unable to find what the %u
is. Any pointers?
