how do i install java?

i followed this guide
http://help.ubuntu.com/starterguide/C/ch03s02.html, but it doesn't get
me java, because there is no /usr/bin/java in the package.
i seem to have some fake java installed:
# java -version
java version "1.4.2"

also, i can't move gij-4.0 out of the way without removing OOo and other
stuff. is java not supposed to run on breezy?
