MP3 Files Playing in Every Application Except XMMS

I suggest you try setting the output plugin to "esound".

Right click the player 

>> Options >> Preferences

At the bottom you'll see "Output Plugin"; set this to "esound" and try playing mp3, or ogg.

This seems to be a common issue, since the player, I think, comes configured by default to use OSS.
