Breezy upgrade disaster

I had a beautiful hoary going and decided to upgrade to breezy.
So ... Edit /etc/apt/sources.list to change all "hoary" to "breezy", start
Synaptic and Update, then Smart Upgrade. All went well as I went to bed, but
it was clear ALL had not been upgraded. So I did it again, and more - but
still not all - were upgraded.
Thinking that maybe it was working within X and KDE that might be causing
conflicts or whatever, I went into Terminal mode and used WaJIG. That seemed
to OK but there were still packages to upgrade and I cannot now get into X.

The error message complains that monitrc is empty. It IS - but it was "empty"
(all info commented out) in my other working system, too! I currently have an
unusable system. PLEASE <sob> how can I fix it?
