$ sudo invoke-rc.d alsa force-unload && sudo rm -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state && sudo modprobe <your driver>
Then adjust your volumes (be sure to unmute Master and PCM).
You can find which driver you're using by looking at the output from:
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
