Stuck in 640x480 on upgrade

I had a similar problem on a Compaq Armada 1700 and could not get
higher than 800x600.  I changed the above setting in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
to 16, rebooted, and now 1024x768 displays just fine.

(BTW, the full Ubuntu install with Gnome is running better for me on
this old latop than the Knoppix install I did a few days ago.)
