support for USB drives in initrd

Hi guys,

does anyone know why the default initrd on Ubuntu doesn't support usb
drives? We had to manually build one with usb support in order to get a
friends laptop running (breezy).

Of course, this is a PITA because one has to either change grubs
menu.lst after every kernel update or simply not update kernels.

Is usb support planned for breezy final?
