Actually the person you're responding to is only partially correct.
In Breezy, any Gstreamer- _or_ ALSA-based application can take
advantage of the sound card selector via System> Preferences> Sound.
You must log out of and back into GNOME after changing the default
card selection for the setting to affect ALSA applications, however
(it's immediate for Gstreamer apps that use esdsink).
For Breezy's vlc, make sure you have vlc-plugin-alsa installed.
I use alsasink in System> Preferences> Multimedia Systems Selector.
My ThinkPad X40 is equipped with an onboard AC'97-compliant chipset
that uses the snd-intel8x0 ALSA driver. Depending on my location, I
sometimes have an M-Audio Transit USB attached. When I do, I choose
the Transit USB via System> Preferences> Sound, then log out of GNOME
and back in.

You're probably using the snd-emu10k1 and snd-intel8x0 drivers. lsmod
will reveal the loaded kernel modules for your sound card.
