Compositing/Transparency newb question

I'm running Breezy and new to linux. I've got the important bits all working
now and I'm interested in fiddling with transparency. I've installed
libxcomposite1 and xcompmgr via synaptic and I've added the required section
to enable compositing in my xorg.conf file. I can vary the transparency of
the panels at the top and bottom, but my gDesklets look like crap with black
box backgrounds. I've got gdesklets configured to use transparency but no
slider adjustment or anything. I read something about a conflict with ubuntu
but I'm not sure what to do.

Can anybody point me to info on this problem. I see all these screenshots
with transparent calendars and the like, but my desktop will do none of it.

I'm running intel 915 integrated graphics. Maybe that's the problem?
