Error in updating my APT repositories

Hi all,

When I reload my APT repositories in Synaptic, I encounter this error:

   http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hoary/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz:
Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)

Is this a permanent error? Or am I doing something wrong?

P.S. I've updated the kernel to the latest image but when my system
boots up I only see one option which is the default kernel that came
with the ISO image. How can I choose the newer kernels?
