In what what does it fail?

> If you go rescue mode all is good, start gdm you can log in with a
> warning HAL failed to start.

Note that rescue mode is not good for daily use, but if you want to get
hal going for testing purposes, you will have to start dbus yourself:

# /etc/init.d/dbus start
# /etc/init.d/gdm start
