915 resolution works fine as well

http://www.freshnet.org/debian/hoary/915resolution_0.4-1_i386.deb

dpkg -i /path/to/916resolution.deb

in terminal sudo 915resolution -l (write down the line for
the resolution you want)

in terminal sudo gedit /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh

at the end of the first section (ends with /etc/default/rcs)
add the line
915resolution 7d 1280 800 (as example mine for a widescreen
laptop)

Save

Exit

ctrl-alt-backspace

restart
