Scanner

This is a good question, and one that I have myself. The problem is
kind of complicated. (1) scanners supported by SANE lags somewhat
behind their availability for purchase, as drivers must be developed
by the community and are rarely, if ever, developed by the scanner
manufacturer. (2) The product cycles for consumer peripherals such as
scanners tends to be very short. Often, by the time a particular
scanner is supported by SANE, it is no longer available in retail
channels. (3) When manufacturers replace older models with updated
ones, they are often very different internally and are not compatible
with drivers for previous models. And the cycle must begin again...

So the question is...What flatbed scanners (preferably in the
consumer/end user segment) are available in retail channels *today*
and are well supported by SANE and Ubuntu? What models have people
had particularly good experiences with?
