What modem is supported?

I need to know what kind of modem is supported and working
out-of-the-box in Ubuntu 5.04 and 5.10.  My mom might be going to
install it, and I'm afraid that the modem in her computer won't be
supported.  What kind should we purchase?  I'd rather not spend very
much money on a modem, so a supported winmodem would be great.  Anyone
have such a thing that is working with only software found on the
installation CD?
