Ubuntu Install and boot issue V5.10

Not likely to be your problem.

Don't know much about Romtecs. Are the Romtecs working. Or...were the 
Romtecs working on that machine before installing Ubuntu?
What other OS are on the drives and can you get these to boot OK?

What happens if the drives are connected to the internal IDE controllers can 
they boot then?
If you boot with Knoppix (for example) can you see hda1?
When Ubuntu was installing do you remember if it chose a drive to be hda1 
(once I did an install on a drive that was connected to a PCI controller 
card -- the install called it hdg1). Maybe you need to change alter GRUB to 
look at the right drive?

Too many questions here, sorry for the lack of answers.
