Question about AMD64 and 64 bit installation

it is in warty, hoary, breezy and dapper since ubuntu exists ...
indeed, you wont see it if you only have the i386 ubuntu version
installed, packages are architecture specific...
if you installed ubuntu i386, you shouldnt use the k7 kernel, since its
compiled for k7 processors and it might produce lockups if the kernel
tries to access a specific k7 register or issues a k7 specific assembler
command.
