Totem/Kaffeine gstreamer will not play DVD but mplayer will. How to fix/remove?

I have installed Breezy x86_64 on a Supermicro dual Opteron system.

I am having problems getting DVD playing to work which seem to be 
related to gstreamer.

I can get DVD to play fine using mplayer (ie DMA enabled, libdvdcss2 
installed, etc.) but Kaffeine and Totem which are using gstreamer give 
an error message of "can not read dvd://1".

1) Am I missing something required by gstreamer?

2) Is there a way to configure Totem and/or Kaffeine to use Xine?
I tried to remove kaffeine-gstream but apt wanted to remove the entire 
kubuntu desktop
(even though kaffeine-xine is installed).

I am have installed kubuntu but am trying to get this working on the std 
Gnome/Ubuntu desktop.
