nVidia with stock kernel crashes when leaving X

I found a document on the web last night that gave two hints at what
might cure these problems. One was to look for
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_dri.so and shift it out of the
way (delete or rename to something else) and the other is to get rid
of the "Chipset" line in xorg.conf/XF86Config.
I am trying option one (move .so out of the way) and so far so good, touch wood.

YMMV and #include "disclaimer.h" and so forth...
