Sounds like you need to install the 

build-essential

package :)

It will get you gcc, g++, make, and some debian build stuff as well - it's one of the first things I install on a new system.
I also recommend you install

checkinstall

apt-cache show build-essential
apt-cache show checkinstall

for more info.
