I think the version will stay the same, will it not, but upgrades will
likely be available via backports eventually.

I agree that the bug fixes are worth having. My vote would be for making an
update available; its just that in a similar situation there turned out to
be very problematic baggage along with the fixes.
OpenOffice.org, like Firefox, is very much a core app and any problems there
are salient for many people and can damage advocacy efforts badly.
