You will find a few other threads that discuss both of these issues.
With respect to the 30 second load, it seems to be a problem with the
latest deb and statically linked packages. There was a thread that
discussed the use of an rpm package to get round this problem. I
haven't tried this.
The sound device problem seems to be common to a few of the recent
skype releases for linux. 'This thread' (http://tinyurl.com/7fn6m)
discusses a solution to this problem. I have downloaded and installed
the skype_dsp_hijack package and it seems to work pretty well. You
will have to compile it, but it's easy to do. Just follow the included
instructions.
You will just need to install the build-essential package before you
can do this.
